Human beings have experimented with technology since time immemorial. They have mastered it to a point where they are able to make ‘replicants’ of themselves expected to act as their slaves. But as we have witnessed over the years, a small bug, glitch or an error in the program could trigger a malfunction. It makes you wonder, what happens if the replicants turn rogue and act against orders. Their strength as a result of bioengineering will easily overpower humans. However the overthinking minds of humans have a solution for such an eventuality. Create more efficient and conforming replicants to hunt and retire the rogues. Thus it was born, the Blade Runner.
Blade Runner(2049) takes place in 30 years after the events of the prequel. The plot follows Ryan Gosling’s character ‘K’ as he discovers something extraordinary, a development that could spell disaster if it falls into the wrong hands. What follows is a journey of awakening and realisation for K.
Even though the script or the writing for every film can arguably be identified as the most important component, the other aspects play a huge part in elevating the movie to greatness. Blade Runner has successfully excelled in all departments. It is nothing short of a visual spectacle. The dystopian future of 2049 is depicted with artistic brilliance providing the viewers a taste of cyberpunk. Anyone who craves aesthetics in films will find Blade Runner as an eternal pastry they could consume forever as every watch offers something fresh for the eyes. The icing on the top of the cake would undoubtedly be the performance delivered by the actors, the surprise among them being Dave Bautista who showcased his prowess in minimum time.
Science fiction is an overexposed and saturated genre. Most of them serve as pieces of entertainment with barely any room for further viewing. But once in a while certain gems like Blade Runner overcomes the flood to excite us with eye popping visuals , making us ponder over various themes and narrative expertise.
Verdict: 6/7 stars
Brilliant.
Trivia:
-
David Bowie was director Denis Villeneuve’s first choice for the role of Niander Wallace, but he died before the start of shooting.
-
The opening scene in which “K” (Ryan Gosling) confronts Sapper Morton (Dave Bautista) is a nearly exact remake of a scene written and storyboarded, but never filmed, for Blade Runner (1982).
