Director Vignesh Shivan’s latest Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal aka ‘KRK’ is an enjoyable entertainer that works for a number of reasons. The biggest of them all, at least for me, is that at a time when the audiences are subjected to thrillers and action flicks week after week, KRK comes as a relief that genuinely tries to weave a light-hearted story around a rather serious topic of polyamory.
It’s not an easy task to mount a project around such a subject with 3 big stars. It’s an even bigger challenge to appealingly cater the content to audiences of all age groups, and, Vignesh with his skillful writing manages to pull off both. Right from the outset, you sort of figure out what Vignesh is trying to achieve through the film. The events are played out in a lighter tone with adequate doses of humour. Even a major confrontation sequence in the second half that would have escalated into a serious dramatic episode in another film, plays out in a unique fashion here, hence never letting the conflicts push the film into a serious zone.
Vignesh is ably supported by his terrific cast. The three – Vijay Sethupathy, Nayanthara, and Samantha, share great chemistry and are fun to watch on screen. The actors seem to have understood the director’s vision and compliment their characters through adequate performances.
Anirudh’s album is already a chartbuster and all the songs are placed well within the narrative. A few of the yet-to-be-released tracks are also effective and heighten the emotional moments. The cinematography by SR Kathir and Vijay Kartik Kannan is praiseworthy, especially the use of different color tones to showcase the different shades of Rambo’s romance. This technique also aids in giving us a detailed peek into the personalities of the two leading ladies.
On the flipside, KRK doesn’t invest much of its time in establishing the all-important romance between the protagonists. As a result, one finds it a touch hard to rationalize the actions of the two ladies towards Rambo, especially in the second half while we are given enough justifications for his decisions repeatedly through dialogues. Also, the over-reliance on these dialogues, even though interesting, to resolve each and every roadblock faced by the lead, gets to you after a point. The editing is slightly off in the first half; a scene, clearly from a chopped-out portion in the final edit, makes a jarring appearance at a crucial juncture towards the interval. The team should have been more careful with it.
Overall, Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal is a harmless fun film comprising of some good music, impressive performances, and quirky writing. Once you’re able to digest this quirky tonality of the film, KRK is bound to leave you happy by the time the end credits roll.
