“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. The hands can’t hit what the eyes can’t see.”

Samara of Sarpatta Parambarai(clan) stands flaunting his chiseled body while coach Rangan encourages him to keep up his guard. A grand visual of strength and perseverance. Like many other films based on sports, Sarpatta Parambarai is also formulaic and predictable but Pa Renjith lives up to his Madras days by inculcating superior making and setting.

The film takes place during the time of emergency which itself is a boon to the film as it was able to bring in some political elements that gelled well with the storyline. As Tamil Nadu opposed the emergency, the fierceness of the youth then translated into their antics in the ring. Boxing over time has become a matter of pride and prestige.

Arya as the protagonist Samara evidently has taken efforts to be in the ideal shape for a boxing hero. However, it is the coach Pashupati that stands out just with his expressions. Additionally, the supporting cast including the likes of John Vijay and Anupama Kumar provides the best platform for the titular characters to showcase their prowess. Dancing Rose played by Shabeer Kallarackal deserves special appreciation.

P.S – Don’t miss the Rocky training scene homage

Verdict – 5/7 stars

Excellent.
