HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOURS?

“To make a great film, you need three things: the script, the script, and the script.” – Alfred Hitchcock.

A great movie demands many elements: a well-written script, near-perfect execution, excellent casting, and a strong technical backbone. Among these, the script forms the foundation, eliminating predictability and elevating the story to new peaks. A brilliant script entices us with bait-and-switch tactics, like fishhooks ready to catch the audience —and we’re hooked!

Sookshmadarshini achieves this rare feat by masterfully merging a compelling script with top-tier technical expertise and brilliant filmmaking, crafting a captivating cinematic journey that stays with you. This becomes a significant leap for MC, transitioning from Nonsense (2018) to this more sensible and solid Sookshmadarshini. Bravo!

The film follows Priyadarshini (Nazriya), a meticulous microbiology graduate who observes every little detail around her. She becomes a not-so-friendly neighbourhood detective to Manuel (Basil Joseph), poking her head into what he’s cooking in his house. This forms the crux of the story. Priya’s sharp observations serve as a lens for the audience, guiding them through her findings and uncovering layers of the mystery. Her character is reminiscent of Aparna from Kishkindha Kaandam, drawing the audience deeper into the narrative through clever storytelling and insightful revelations.

This movie is one of the finest presentations in Malayalam cinema. It offers an exhilarating experience, leaving you satisfied as you backtrack and piece together the events that transpired. The first and second acts are perfectly placed, and the third act heightens the excitement with intercuts that give goosebumps.

The twists and turns are executed convincingly and the film excels in its character development, tension building, clever dialogues, meticulous detailing, foreshadowing, dark humour, and the way all these elements tie together seamlessly at the end.

Sookshmadarshini marks a stunning achievement in Malayalam cinema, where a brilliant script is brought to life through exceptional filmmaking, promising a bright future for thrillers in the industry.

Cooked to perfection.

Verdict : 6/7 stars

Brilliant.
