Watusi Zombie! is a unique Malayalam indie film that keenly observes the restless inner lives of urban Gen Z youth just before a global pause. Set in pre pandemic Kochi, the film avoids conventional storytelling. It unfolds through a series of conversations, encounters, and reflections that feel casual but quietly profound.
At the heart of the film is Grindset Gabriel, a micro celebrity and aspiring stand up comedian who represents the mixed emotions of his generation. Gabriel is confident yet insecure, socially visible yet emotionally lost. He is always performing online, in conversations, and even in private moments while trying to figure out what authenticity means in a world fueled by attention, rumors, and self promotion. Rather than making him a traditional hero, the film presents him as a deeply human and flawed observer of his own life.
The narrative loosely follows a podcast conversation and an “ugly” rumor that draws Gabriel into a web of interactions with other unusual and ambitious characters. These encounters form the backbone of the film, offering glimpses of Gen Z anxieties about jobs, relationships, freedom, and relevance. The story does not rush toward a dramatic climax. Instead, it drifts intentionally, reflecting the uncertainty and emotional limbo of its characters.
What makes Watusi Zombie! shine is its tone. The film is satirical without being cynical and humorous without forcing laughter. Its dialogue often switches between English and Malayalam and feels natural and current, capturing the rhythm of urban youth conversations. Many scenes carry an awkwardness, but it is a purposeful awkwardness that highlights the discomfort of a generation seeking meaning amid the noise.
Visually and narratively minimal, the film focuses on character moments instead of plot mechanics. This may feel aimless to viewers expecting a standard story arc. However, for those open to it, the film offers refreshing honesty. By the time it reaches its quiet conclusion, Watusi Zombie! leaves behind a sense of connection, suggesting that even in a world driven by performance, moments of sincerity still matter.
Overall, Watusi Zombie! is less about telling a story and more about capturing a feeling. It is a thoughtful and offbeat portrait of Gen Z life that feels especially relevant in hindsight, serving as a snapshot of a world just before everything changed.
Verdict: 5/7 Stars.
Excellent.
