Cinema is generally viewed as a form of entertainment. Thus the makers ensure aspects that please the viewers. Triumph of good over evil, a happy ending to a love story or a policeman solving the crime. Aforementioned themes when explored well , sprout blockbusters. However the ones that remain with us even after viewing are those which took a step forward to think outside the box. Malayalam cinema has been well known for the same. But even with a progressive outlook many films have watered down storylines and restrained themselves from depicting harsh realities. It is precisely the department in which Biryani has excelled profoundly.
The film begins with outdated and prejudiced customs that are prevalent in society. One may have preconceived notions about how they will be pictured. Surprisingly Biryani does not shy away from displaying certain rituals just the way they are much to the surprise and at times aversion of the viewers. Nevertheless the events that unfold in the first half are just mere curtain raisers for the imminent final blow. Fair warning to the viewers, no decorations, no sugarcoating and absolutely no holding back from the makers. Expect the worst!
Verdict: 5/7 Stars.
The film was screened at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) 2021.
